When planning a trip, nationally or internationally, I frequently get asked, “How do I know the best accommodation to book?” With so many options and platforms available today, knowing where to start looking can be overwhelming. I typically research hotels and Airbnbs in the desired area to decide. Several factors come into play in why I book a particular place. Some of the main questions I think about before booking are:
- How many people are going? Is this a small group, couple, or family reunion?
- Do I need to rent a car? Is everything near the accommodation, or is it more convenient to drive? Does the hotel/Airbnb offer free parking?
- Is there a significant price differential between the two?
- What is the vibe I am looking for? Are you seeking something more private? Is a resort the best option so you never have to leave?
- Did previous guests enjoy their stay at this particular hotel/Airbnb?
- Are extra amenities, like a concierge or spa, essential?
- Do you want to immerse yourself in the local culture (if international)?
- How long am I staying? Is it a quick overnight stay or a week-long vacation?
- What provides the best overall value?
Airbnb more often suits my needs for several reasons. My favorite things about staying at an Airbnb are:
- Easy self-check-in processes
- Abundance of choices depending on the location
- Reading recent reviews
- Filtering to Superhosts for a better guest experience
- More spacious for larger groups
- Airbnb experiences platform for good local activities
- Extra amenities like kitchen, pool, gym, game rooms, etc., depending on the place booked
- More "homey" feel
- Ease of searching and filtering to your specific criteria
When I stay at hotels, there are services that usually only resorts or hotels can offer. My favorite things about staying in a hotel/resort are:
- Amenities provided on-site (gym, pool, restaurants, bars, spa)
- Concierge services
- Pre-planned guest activities
- Baggage drop-off service
- Complimentary breakfast (depending on hotel/resort)
- Airport transfers (depending on hotel/resort)
- Social events with other guests
- If traveling with a large group, you can have your separate rooms if you want privacy
- More flexible check in and out times (depending on availability)
