1. Fig (food-is-good) – We had a New Year's Eve reservation, and the reviews did not lie. Fig was one of our favorite places we ate at during our stay in Charleston. You must make a reservation in advance if you even want to step inside, and they open the booking four weeks in advance. The ambiance is perfect, with dimmer lights, a romantic feel, and service that will exceed all expectations. My husband ordered the Mustard Crusted Wreckfish, and I had the Cast Iron Wagyu Bavette. They were fresh, flavorful, and unlike any other dish. He said it was the best fish he's ever had and doesn't often eat it. We finished with dessert and were more than pleased with the overall experience.
2. Sorelle- We went here to celebrate my 30th birthday and made reservations around eight weeks in advance. From the moment we walked in, it had a unique vibe. There were patterns on the floor, hanging plants, and a warm and lively atmosphere. It is multi-level, but an elevator gets you to any floor. We ate in the main dining restaurant, but a bar and lounge are also available on a first-come, first-served basis. Since we were celebrating my birthday, a sign was on our table for the occasion. It was a nice gesture that was truly above and beyond. I ordered a decaf expresso martini, and my husband got a sweet tea. We started with bread and olive oil, which was cooked to perfection. As an entrée, I had the Pillows of gold ricotta tortellini. It was rich due to the cheese, and I loved every bite. My husband ordered the Shrimp Oreganata, and it was delicious. I wanted to try the tiramisu so bad, but I didn't have enough room, and being lactose intolerant, it probably wasn't the best idea. The service was exceptional, and we did not leave hungry. I 12/10 recommend this place and will return next time we are in town.
3. High Cotton – We decided to try this place based on reviews we had read, and we both loved our experience from start to finish. We made a reservation relatively easy (we were there during low season) and were seated right by the window where we could watch pedestrians walking on Bay Street. Our server was attentive and knowledgeable, and we had a delicious dinner. We both ordered a cocktail to start, a decaf expresso martini for me, and a regular for my husband. I never knew a decaf cocktail existed before, and it made me question why I never thought of it. As an appetizer, we each ordered a salad, the local farm greens, and the wedge. The farm greens were simple yet tasty and light. The wedge salad came with avocado, and I enjoyed the uniqueness. I had the new Bedford scallops for the entree, which were exceptionally fresh and flavorful over the corned relish. I tried a bite of my husband's shrimp and grits, which had abundant flavor. We left the restaurant full, and glad we tried it.
4. Wild Olive – This restaurant is on John's Island, but my husband wanted to go to an Italian restaurant for his birthday, so this was his choice. It is trendy, and you must make your reservation in advance. They only open reservations two weeks before the date, so make sure you set a reminder to make it for your desired date, or it'll fill up. Upon arrival, we were seated in the back corner, which we prefer for privacy. Many tables are close together, and when it's busy, it can be loud. We started the celebration with a glass of wine and a warm bread appetizer. When the warm loaf came out, we almost devoured the whole thing. My husband ordered the chicken parmesan, and I ordered the tagliatelle alla Bolognese. His chicken piece was large, and my dish was a generous portion. I wasn't thrilled with my selection, and I wish I had gone with my gut and ordered the gnocchi instead. Overall, I'd go back to try something else, but it wouldn't be on the top of the list.
5. Lewis BBQ – Let's start by saying the lines at this joint speak for themselves. When we arrived, the line was nearly out the door to order. We probably waited around 20-30 minutes to order, but it was worth it. It was hands down the best barbeque I've had in a long time, and the menu was extensive. You can tell it's all fresh and made to order, which I appreciate. I ordered the sliced prime beef brisket sandwich and shared a side of chips and queso. The queso had a few green chili peppers, so it did have a bit of spice. After eating lunch, we were full for the rest of the day. If you don't stop here in Charleston, you are missing out!
6. Meeting at Market – My mother and I had lunch here after browsing through the City Market, and we had an exceptional experience. I had gone here for drinks at the bar in the past, but I had never tried their food. I ordered an expresso martini and the signature smash burger with the market side salad. Let me tell you, it was one of the best burgers I have ever had. It was large, without being overbearing, and the meat wasn't super greasy like a burger typically is. The market salad was light and flavorful, and I enjoyed the dressing. If you're looking to watch a sports game or have a more casual experience, this place is certainly one I would recommend for both food and drinks.
7. Home Team BBQ- There are a few locations around the Charleston area, and we went to the one in Mount Pleasant. The outdoor space was ample, though it was too chilly to eat outside. Their barbeque was good, but the Lewis BBQ restaurant was much better. I'd eat it again if it were nearby, but I wouldn't particularly seek it out.
8. Burton's Grill & Bar- This is the place to go if you have food allergies. We went twice and had a great experience both times. They take reservations, and I encourage you to take advantage of that. On Wednesdays, they offer half-off bottles under $60. They have an extensive menu, and everything we tried was delicious, from the buffalo chicken dip to the steaks. If you are seeking gluten-free food, they have a menu just as extensive! They have chefs on staff who will make the allergy-restricted food and bring it out separately. Whether you have allergies or not, this is a great spot to go.
9. Islander 71- We visited this restaurant in Isle of Palms several times. It's on the Intracoastal and has a nice view of the water and marina. There is an outdoor space and a rooftop bar. They have an oyster roast every Saturday beginning at noon until they run out. If you're into seafood and good cocktails, this is the place for you! It's the perfect place to pop in before or after the beach.
10. Locals Sushi- We came across this hidden gem when we were in the mood for good sushi. There are a few different locations around Charleston, and they offer some excellent deals during the week. On Monday, they have 50% off sushi rolls from 3 pm to close. On Thursday, they offer buy one roll, get one 50% off all day. We went on Thursday, and each ordered a specialty roll. They were so good, we'd go back in a heartbeat!
11. Tavern & Table- My husband and I ate lunch here inside, and the food was pretty good. I ordered the mac n cheese as my meal, and he ordered fish and chips. The service was good, and it was relatively quiet. They offer happy hour during the week, which may be another reason to check out this place. This would be a good choice if you're in the area and want to eat at Shem Creek.
12. Saltwater Cowboy- We went here twice for brunch during our stay. We ate outside with the heat lamp the first time, and the second time, we dined inside due to the weather. The food was okay and nothing special, but the view was amazing. I recommend this place due to the view of Shem Creek, so if the weather isn't that great, I'd probably not eat here. It may be better if you want a few drinks outside.
